Your Thing

Confession: this post has an ulterior motive. Except… Well, if I call it out like that right there at the beginning, it seems more utterly obvious than ulterior. Huh.
Well here’s the thing: as I get really amped about creating my coaching practice, all of the entrepreneurial marketing-type experts out there say to focus on only [...]

Or do anything really.
I played badminton completely humiliated myself on Halloween. An actual tournament of embarrassment if you will. (I’m athletic, I love tennis, I can hold my own in most sports; something about badminton brings out extreme lack of coordination. Particularly embarrassing while donning a costume.) Anyway, not the point, just setting the scene.
I [...]

Then what?

October 21, 2009

You get something you want, you achieve a major goal, you’re finally “there”. And then what? This is a theme I’m working with lately. Kind of a lot.
(Also, this is where I have to tell you that I don’t see myself as much of a goal kind of person. Even though I think figuring out what you [...]

Mining your joy for a job

August 27, 2009

Okay, back to discovering our passion.  This is the fun part.  Except when it isn’t.
Because when you feel completely numb and can no longer hear that still, small voice within whispering clues about your most fervent desires, it can be a very painful place to be. Fortunately, if you’re willing to dig deep, I guarantee [...]

All right, now that I’ve got that birthday thing out of the way, back to finding our thing in the sweet spot. With marketable skills (snooze) and genetic talent (holy ancestral confusion) out of the way, next up: passion ~ yum, let’s do it.
If you missed the earlier posts:

first I introduced Jim Collins‘ theory of the hedgehog [...]

I totally wanted to call this post “shaking whatchyo mama gave you,” but I just couldn’t bring my inner nerdy, boho-prepster to do it.
Anyway, this search for the sweet spot is turning into quite the series.  It turns out I have a bit to say about finding a happy life work.  Like, way more [...]

Last time I talked about my general resistance to assessment tests, and newfound irritation at the fact that they’re usually onto something. I loved reading the comments which reminded me that any categorization necessarily involves a wide range of possibilities.  And that continuum takes us back to the whole unique snowflake idea.
For example, in Myers-Briggs I [...]

Next up in our investigation of the sweet spot trifecta: What is your superpower?  I really wish I could help you (and me) discover it in one blog post.  Obviously this is more of a process.
Last time was all about marketable skills and I promise not to use that exact term again for awhile, because [...]

I want to start off by saying that I find talking about “marketable skills” and qualifications to be pretty snooze-worthy.  (Yeah, that’s one way to start a blog post: What you are about to read will be very dull erm, practical.)  Zeroing in and getting excited about your qualifications while stuck in a career you [...]

When I took the leap and left my corporate career, I told people I needed time to figure out “what I want to be when I grow up.”  What I really meant was that I was tired of settling.  I had a feeling life was supposed to feel like living (yeah, I’m kinda slow), and [...]
